Eskom offers a rebate for solar water heaters purchased from pre-approved installers

WHAT IS THE ESKOM REBATE?

Eskom has accredited a range of solar water heaters, heat pumps, and suppliers. This means that if you buy one of these units from one of the accredited suppliers, you are eligible for the Eskom rebate.

The ESKOM subsidy amount varies according to different types of solar water heater units or heat pumps and their relative efficiency in saving electricity. The range of rebate amounts offered by ESKOM varies between R 2,500 and R 13,000 per unit.

Please note that Eskom is only offering the subsidy on heat pumps until March 2013. This means that if you want to get a heat pump at a reduced price, now is the time.

HOW DO I GET THE REBATE?

Before you buy from a supplier, check whether the supplier will claim the rebate and offer you the discounted price, or whether you will pay the full price and then need to claim the rebate from Eskom yourself.

The advantage of purchasing your solar water heater or heat pump through the Shisa Solar Programme is that our pre-approved suppliers will offer you a quotation which already includes the Eskom rebate. This means that the supplier will make the application on your behalf and that you do not have to claim the rebate from Eskom yourself.

If the supplier will not make the application on your behalf, you pay the full installation price and claim back the rebate amount from Eskom.

If you use a supplier that is not part of the Shisa Solar Programme and they will not make the application on your behalf, you pay the full installation price and claim back the rebate amount from Eskom. To claim your rebate all you need to do is submit a claim form provided to you by your ESKOM registered supplier/installer.

Note that in order to claim a rebate you must install an ESKOM approved solar water heating system and use a registered installer.

Both you and the supplier must complete the claim form and it must be signed off by a qualified electrician. You can then either post or drop it into one of the designated drop-boxes.

You will receive your rebate within 8 weeks of receipt of your completed claim.
